Book Review

Beartown

3.2/5

A small Swedish hockey town is rocked when its star player is accused of rape.

This book immediately jumped into the deep end. There are two sentences in Chapter One. Total. And yet, Beartown was slow to get into, as most impactful books usually are. I found the writing descriptive but almost too much so. There are a lot of characters! It almost feels like the whole town was being introduced. I trudged on, waiting for the plot to start. It wasn’t until Chapter Eighteen, nearly halfway into the book, that something happened. It was the first point that I wanted to keep reading. That being said, Backman is really great at creating deep waters and emotional layers. This was the first book that exposed me to the impact of rape on an entire community. I am better for having read Beartown.

Audiobook Review The narration was on point. Love Marin Ireland. She had this edge that fits the book perfectly. Her range of character definition is impressive. I will be looking for more books narrated by her.

You can buy Beartown by Frederick Backman here from Amazon or you can also choose to support local bookstores by purchasing it from Bookshop although I highly recommend listening to this book! You can buy the audio version at Libro.fm here.
