Dumplings
Easy and as old as time (or at least the Middle Ages), dumplings are the perfect addition to make any soup or stew a fulfilling meal. Ingredients 2 cups flour 4 t baking powder 1 t salt 1 cup milk 1/2 t sugar 1 T butter Mix all ingredients together and rest for 5 minutes. Drop by spoonfuls into simmering soup or stew. Cover and cook for 15 minutes. Nerdy Fact almost every culture has some form of dumpling. I grew up with a German potato dumpling served with pork and sauerkraut. It’s still one of my favorite meals and a comfort food go to.

The Nightingale Book Review
author, Kristin Hannah narrator, Polly Stone, setting, France, 1940s Book Rating: 5/5 “In love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.” This book has a presence. A heartbreaking yet inspirational novel, The Nightingale was such an emotional read for me. I listened to the audio during my daily walks and I remember sobbing while walking past fields of cows, their big cow eyes following me down the road. I carried this book around in my heart for weeks. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I related to it throughout different aspects of my daily life. Even a year later, I feel an…

Caramel Cake Petit Fours
The Cake This is basically a pound cake with a few minor adjustments, including extra eggs. Eggs are the magical ingredient. Their job in this batter is to provide structure. When heated, egg proteins coagulate and give stiffness to the cake- all the better for shaping our little petite fours. Nerdy Tips It’s important to cream the butter and shortening first then mixing in the sugar. It gives the end product structure by beating air into the butter, while the sugar helps to hold the air by dissolving, leaving little bubbles throughout the fats. Mixing in the eggs one at a time helps to create a lighter, spongier cake. Use a…

Kya’s Tumped Grits
The Yankee made grits. What would a food journey around “Where the Crawdads Sing” be without grits??They have a star appearance at the beginning of Kya’s story and they stay a comforting lifelong companion throughout the book. Our lives are at times defined by food, or sometimes as in Kya’s case, lack thereof. When we are ill, we all have a comfort food that comes to mind. Our holidays are stacked with memories of Grandma’s turkey or auntie’s pies. Birthdays come with cake. Funerals come with casseroles. When times are hard, there is often a consistent food. College days with little cash bring lots of ramen noodles, rice, cereal or-…
